Fundamental Emotional and Social Skills: Unit of Learning

Emotional intelligence (EQ) is a lifelong journey. With continued evidence of emotional instabilityin our society, we must intentionally create and strengthen a foundation for social and emotionallearning for elementary and middle school learners. While our academic core subjects mustremain a priority, it is no longer enough to rely on them, alone, to prepare our students. Publichealth and safety concerns are growing. We must address how academic and intellectualachievement falls short when not connected to emotional growth. This unit of learning will serveas a cornerstone for all other learning and is critical for well-rounded academic, emotional andsocial development contributing to a healthy emotional life and relationships.LearnEQ LLC was founded through a partnership of professional educators, EQ and Leadershipconsultants and parents whose purpose is to contribute to greater stability of our culture byevolving elementary (5th grade) and middle school students toward a higher level of emotionalintelligence (EQ). LearnEQ is adapted from the core principles of emotional intelligenceresearched and published by Daniel Goleman**.Each lesson follows a similar instruction flow starting with a daily bell ringer and ending withan exit slip and assessment. Teachers will begin Lesson 1 by reviewing key terms and definitionsincluding empathy, students will review scenarios and apply learning. In Lesson 2, learners willfocus on how the brain impacts emotions and how to recognize positive and negative emotionalresponses. During Lesson 3, students will learn about self-talk and practice with examples ofhealthy and unhealthy thought choices. Lesson 4 is action packed with learning about socialsituations and how to classify bullying and determine appropriate responses. Lastly, in Lesson 5,students wrap up the unit with learning how to distinguish between healthy and unhealthyrelationship traits and with more activities targeted at various social situations. With this lastlesson, students will also be challenged with how to improve their school or community basedon the unit lessons.
